Assam Police now leads nation in scientific policing: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati, Dec 12 (LatestNewsX) – Assam is now at the cutting edge of scientific policing in India after becoming the first state to put the Measurement Control Unit (MCU) into action, boosting criminal tracking and forensic‑driven investigations.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the launch represents a significant step forward in modernising policing and improving how justice is delivered. On X, Sarma posted that Assam Police now “leads the nation in scientific policing,” pointing out the use of cutting‑edge tools for DNA, retina and biometric capture.

The new system allows for rapid identification of repeat offenders across state borders, cutting the time needed for checks and widening the reach of interstate crime detection.

A senior police officer explained that the MCU offers a single platform that merges several identification systems, enabling law‑enforcement agencies to track criminal histories far faster and more accurately. It should be especially helpful in cases involving habitual criminals, organised crime groups, or where cross‑border movement is involved.

Sarma added that this technological upgrade demonstrates the government’s dedication to harnessing science for public safety. “When science strengthens the law, crime has nowhere to hide,” he wrote, underscoring how these tools are reshaping frontline policing in Assam.

Over recent years, the Assam Police have rolled out numerous capacity‑building initiatives, building forensic infrastructure, enhancing digital crime monitoring, and conducting statewide training to familiarize officers with emerging technologies. The MCU builds upon these reforms and aligns with the government’s broader aim of bringing policing standards up to global best practices.

Senior officials noted that the new system will also lessen reliance on traditional identification methods, which can be slow and error‑prone. By supporting real‑time data capture and verification, the MCU is expected to streamline investigations and raise conviction rates.

With this rollout, Assam becomes the pioneer state to implement such a comprehensive scientific identification mechanism, setting new standards for technology‑driven policing across the nation.
