Assam Rifles apprehends ULFA (I) cadre involved in Kakopathar Army camp attack

New Delhi, Oct 26 – An operation by the Assam Rifles has nabbed a member of the banned ULFA (I) group after the group carried out an attack on the Army Camp at Kakopathar, Assam, on October 17.

The raid took place early on the morning of October 25, 2025, following intelligence that pointed to the insurgents’ hide‑out in Manfeisang, Namsai District in South Arunachal Pradesh.

Assam Rifles units, working with the Arunachal Pradesh Police, tracked the target using drones, tracker dogs and aerial reconnaissance. The team eventually caught a 24‑year‑old ULFA member, named Corporal Thawseng Asom (also known as Anupom Dohatiya) from Makum Bariakoli in Tinsukia District, near Hanthi Camp.

The captured insurgent was linked to the attack on the Kakopathar Army Camp. In the same area, the forces seized a rifle, three magazines, 151 rounds of 7.62‑mm ammunition, a rifle grenade and a hand grenade from Pathargaon.

All recovered weapons and the captured cadre were turned over to the Arunachal Pradesh Police for further investigation and legal action.

This operation is part of wider counter‑insurgency patrols across the Northeast that have increasingly disrupted strikes by ULFA (I) and NSCN‑K (YA). Earlier this month, NSCN‑K (YA) tried to attack a camp in Changlang District, while ULFA (I) launched a similar attempt at Kakopathar. Rapid police and army responses have since neutralised several insurgents and recovered their armaments, boosting confidence among security forces and curbing the threat to regional stability.
