In Imphal, Manipur, top officials gathered on Saturday to honor two brave Assam Rifles soldiers killed in a deadly ambush. Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Lt Gen Ram Chander Tiwari, head of the Army’s Eastern Command, led the emotional tributes to Naib-Subedar Shyam Gurung, 59, and Rifleman Ranjit Singh Kashyap, 36.
The attack happened on Friday in Bishnupur district, where unidentified gunmen ambushed their convoy along the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway in the Nambol Sabal Leikai area. The soldiers were heading back from flood relief efforts in the Imphal Valley when the militants struck. Five other personnel suffered injuries in the Manipur ambush, but Gurung and Kashyap fought on despite severe gunshot wounds before making the ultimate sacrifice for the nation.
Defence spokesperson Lt Col Amit Shukla described the ceremony at Mantripukhri Garrison as deeply moving. Around 150 people joined, including troops, veterans, and leaders from Assam Rifles, the Directorate General of Assam Rifles, Central Armed Police Forces, Border Security Force, and Manipur Police. They laid wreaths, stood for a guard of honor, and shared stories of the soldiers’ courage and selflessness.
Veterans also showed up to pay their respects, highlighting the strong bond of camaraderie in the armed forces. The Assam Rifles vowed to keep remembering these heroes and stay committed to protecting the country with the same patriotism and duty.
The ambush drew sharp criticism from leaders across the board. Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, state Congress President Keisham Meghachandra Singh, and groups like the Kuki-Zo Council strongly condemned the attack on the Assam Rifles convoy, calling for justice after the loss of two lives and injuries to five others in this tragic Manipur violence.
