Assam Rifles troops made a big bust in Mizoram, grabbing 1.377 kilograms of heroin worth about Rs 11.40 crore and nabbing three drug peddlers, including a woman. Officials shared the details on Wednesday.
Acting on solid tips about drug trafficking, the paramilitary force kicked off an operation late Tuesday night along World Bank Road near Zokhawthar town in Champhai district. They spotted three people acting suspiciously, like they were hunting for something hidden. The group—Zarzosanga, Joseph Lalmuansanga, and Malsawmkimi—got caught red-handed while trying to grab a concealed package.
A quick search turned up the heroin stash, hidden in the area. The troops handed over the drugs and the suspects to the Customs and Narcotics Department for further action.
This seizure highlights the ongoing drug smuggling woes along India’s border with Myanmar. The two countries share a 1,643-kilometer unfenced stretch touching four northeastern states: Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram. Mizoram acts as a major gateway for heroin and methamphetamine tablets flowing into India from Myanmar’s Chin state. Smugglers use six Mizoram districts—Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip—to sneak in drugs, exotic animals, and other illegal goods.
Meanwhile, in neighboring Tripura, Chief Minister Manik Saha revealed tough numbers on the drug fight. Over the last three financial years (2022-23, 2023-24, and 2024-25), law enforcement agencies arrested 248 people for illegal drug use and hauled in 2,729 drug peddlers. They’re still hunting for 28 more suspects who are on the run.
Saha, who also oversees the home department, told the state assembly that conviction rates under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act remain low—11.7% in 2022 and 2023, dropping to 5% in 2024. Courts have ordered the destruction of seized drugs, and special committees have burned them at designated spots to keep them off the streets.
