Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, called out the state police on Tuesday after a BJP member of parliament, Khagen Murmu, was attacked. The incident happened in Nagrakata, a village in Jalpaiguri district, and triggered a flurry of political reactions.
Against the police, a warning
Adhikari went straight to a private hospital in Siliguri, where the injured MP was receiving treatment. He told the Director General of Police, Rajeev Kumar, to pack his bags because the situation “will soon bring a call from Delhi.” The MP’s injuries are serious: a fractured bone below the eye and facial trauma that will require surgery.
“I’ll make sure that the blood of our MP is avenged in the next 2026 Bengal Assembly polls,” Adhikari said. He added that if the BJP came to power, arrangements would be made “within 24 hours.” He also called on Jalpaiguri’s superintendent of police, Sri Khandbahale Umesh Ganpat, to leave for Delhi immediately. “The Lok Sabha Speaker will soon give them a call,” he said.
Higher‑level pressure
The Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, has already asked the West Bengal government for a report on the attack. Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, echoed the demand. He warned that the state must submit its report soon or face legal action.
Who was attacked and why?
BJP MPs Khagen Murmu and MLA Shankar Ghosh were attacked while traveling to meet residents affected by North Bengal landslides. The attack took place near Nagrakata. The MP was rushed to a primary health centre and is now in an intensive‑care unit in Siliguri. The BJP filed a complaint against eight suspects at a police station in Jalpaiguri the following night and staged a protest demanding arrests. So far, no one has been detained.
Adhikari’s support for the MP
Adhikari expressed strong support for Khagen Murmu, describing the assailants as “Mamta Banerjee’s goons” and saying the politician’s spirit remains unbroken. He assured that the BJP would stand by the MP through his recovery.
The attack has amplified political tensions in West Bengal, raising concerns about safety for opposition leaders and the role of police administration ahead of the 2026 Bengal Assembly elections.
