Voters in West Bengal are getting a big heads-up for next year’s crucial state assembly elections. The Chief Electoral Officer’s office in Kolkata has kicked off a project to build a virtual database packed with details on all polling booths. This move aims to give people easy access to info about where they’ll vote, making sure no one shows up confused on election day.
An official from the CEO’s office explained that many longtime voters might find their booth locations changed from past elections. That’s because West Bengal plans to ramp up its polling stations by about 17% for the 2026 assembly polls, compared to the 2021 state elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Expect more than 94,000 booths in total—a solid 16.5% jump—to handle the crowds better.
The reason? The Election Commission of India wants no booth overcrowded with over 1,200 voters. To meet that rule, officials had to add more stations across the state.
The new database will be a goldmine of practical info. It covers exact locations, nearby distances from voters’ homes, and on-site setups like ramps for accessibility, restrooms, toilets, and even entry and exit points. The goal is straightforward: help everyone prepare ahead and vote smoothly without hassles.
Local election teams at the district and block levels will tap into this database directly, keeping things organized from top to bottom. With West Bengal elections drawing massive attention, this voter-friendly step could make a real difference in turnout and satisfaction.
