In Murshidabad, West Bengal, Border Security Force (BSF) troops stopped a gold smuggling attempt at the Boyraghat Border Outpost on the Indo‑Bangladesh frontier.
The operation kicked off after the BSF received a tip that someone was trying to move gold across the border. The border guards, already on high alert, spotted a motorcyclist near 10 a.m. They stopped him and searched the bike. Inside the footrest they found two gold biscuits and two small pieces of gold, worth about ₹55 lakh (₹5.5 million).
The suspect, a local from Pirojpur village in the Raghunathganj area, claimed he had been handed the bike by a friend and was simply delivering it to someone else. He said the gold was already hidden in the bike when he received it, and that he had been offered ₹2,000 for the job – a cash sum that was unregistered at all levels.
Police confirm that the seized gold weighs 461.29 grams, roughly a ton of gold. The man, the gold, and his motorcycle have been turned over to the authorities for further legal action.
“Thanks to our intelligence network and alert border personnel, we keep a close eye on all smuggling activities along this stretch of the Indo‑Bangladesh border,” an unnamed senior BSF officer said. The incident underscores the BSF’s ongoing role in protecting India’s borders from illegal trade.
