West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has some good news for families waiting to reunite. Her government has freed 840 prisoners serving life sentences since 2011. All of them had already spent more than 14 years behind bars, showing good behavior that earned them this second chance.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Banerjee shared that 45 more inmates are now getting released after following all legal steps. “Our government has legally released many life prisoners who have served over 14 years. Since 2011, 840 such people have walked free. Another 45 are on their way out. I congratulate them and their families,” she wrote.
The Chief Minister praised their conduct in prison, calling the release a reward for turning over a new leaf. She hopes these individuals will now live reformed lives and become responsible citizens. “Prisons should reform criminals and help them rejoin society. I trust these released prisoners will make the most of their freedom and contribute positively—that’s when our work truly pays off,” Banerjee added.
This announcement feels like timely relief, especially with Durga Puja just around the corner. Families can now celebrate the festival together, adding joy to the festivities. Sources say the timing couldn’t be better for these reunions.
On a related note, Mamata Banerjee is gearing up to kick off Durga Puja celebrations. Starting tomorrow, she’ll virtually inaugurate pujas across various districts. From Mahalaya on September 21, she’ll launch popular events in Kolkata, wrapping up by September 25. It’s set to be a vibrant start to the festival season in West Bengal.
