Bengal LoP accuses CM Mamata for making ‘untrue’ claims over swimmer Bula Choudhury’s Arjuna Award

Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in West Bengal, said on Sunday that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made a false claim about the Arjuna Award that famous swimmer Bula Choudhury received.

The accusation came after Banerjee spoke at a ceremony in Kolkata where the Indian team’s Women’s World Cup captain Richa Ghosh was being honored. Banerjee told the crowd that when she was a Union Minister of State for Sports, Choudhury had asked her to award the Arjuna Award to her.

Adhikari rejected that story on social‑media, noting that Bula Choudhury was awarded the Arjuna in 1990 – a year before Banerjee had even been elected to Parliament. The opposition leader pointed to parliamentary records that show Banerjee lost her seat in 1989 and did not return until the 1991 elections. It would have been impossible for Choudhury to have asked Banerjee in 1991.

Bula Choudhury, who broke the English Channel in 1990, has never competed in the Commonwealth Games after 1982. According to Adhikari, the award came from her own achievements, not from any influence by Banerjee. He called Banerjee’s claim “insulting” and asked the Chief Minister to issue a public apology.

So far, the Trinamool Congress has not responded to the allegation.
