Bengal: Mother kills children, hangs herself after dispute with husband

In a heartbreaking tragedy during the Durga Puja celebrations, a 28-year-old mother in West Bengal’s Malda district killed her two young children before taking her own life. The shocking incident unfolded on Monday in Old Malda, casting a shadow over what should have been a festive time.

Police say Rupali Haldar strangled her 7-year-old son, Ayan Haldar, and her 6-month-old daughter in their home. She then hanged herself from a ceiling fan. Officers from the Malda police station rushed to the scene after locals raised the alarm and recovered the three bodies, which they sent for autopsy right away.

Rupali and her husband, Asit Haldar, had been staying at her father’s house in nearby Gangarampur, South Dinajpur district. The couple had argued constantly for the past three to four months, sources close to the investigation told . Tensions boiled over on Sunday night—the eve of Durga Puja’s Shasthi—when Asit wanted to take their son out to enjoy the festival lights. Rupali objected, sparking yet another fight. She went to sleep in one room with the kids, while Asit slept separately.

By Monday morning, around 10 a.m., family members grew worried when Rupali didn’t stir. They forced open the door and discovered the devastating scene: the children’s bodies on the bed and Rupali hanging above. “This came as a complete shock to us,” said Rupali’s father-in-law, Tarun Haldar, speaking to reporters. He explained the argument started over whether Asit could take his grandson for a walk during the Puja festivities. “She wouldn’t let him go with his father, and things escalated from there.”

A senior Malda police officer confirmed the details, adding that Asit Haldar is now in custody as the investigation continues. Authorities are piecing together the full story behind this West Bengal family tragedy, which has left the community reeling amid the ongoing Durga Puja.
