West Bengal Police Detain Ghulam Nabi Azad Over Alleged Assault
Murshidabad, Dec. 28 – Police in West Bengal have taken into custody Ghulam Nabi Azad – who goes by “Robin” – the son of Janata Unnayan Party (JUP) founder Humayun Kabir. Authorities say Robin was arrested after an allegation that he beat Kabir’s personal security officer (PSO).
The incident took place on Saturday morning at Kabir’s ground‑floor office in the Saktipur police area. Constable Jumma Khan, who serves as Kabir’s PSO, filed a complaint at Saktipur Police Station claiming that he was struck by Robin after Khan asked for leave from duty. Khan said several people were present when the assault occurred.
Following the complaint, a police team went to Kabir’s residence to question him. The next day, investigators detained Robin pending further inquiry. Police officials stated that a full investigation is underway and that additional action will be taken once all aspects of the case are examined.
The case has come at a time when Kabir is already in the news. The former Trinamool Congress (TMC) member, now a suspended MLA for Bharatpur, drew national attention when he laid the foundation stone for a proposed Babri Masjid in Murshidabad on December 6 – the anniversary of the 1992 demolition. The gesture triggered widespread backlash, prompting TMC to suspend him and leading him to launch his own political outfit, the Janata Unnayan Party. Kabir has announced plans to contest 182 seats in the upcoming West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections and has floated the possibility of aligning with Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM and Naushad Siddiqui’s Indian Secular Front.
In an interview with IANS earlier on Sunday, Kabir said he would respond firmly to any attempt to stir trouble over his mosque proposal. He also highlighted that Murshidabad’s Muslim population stands at about 72 percent, contrasting it with Ayodhya, where he believes only a small minority resides. Based on this demographic reality, Kabir questioned the resistance to building the Babri Masjid in the region.
The police investigation will determine whether the allegations against Robin are substantiated. Additional details will be released as more information becomes available.
