Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of opposition in the West Bengal assembly and a senior BJP figure, sparked a police confrontation in Krishnanagar after he accused a Kotwali police station officer of mistreating people during the Jagaddhatri Puja immersion.
The protest took place on Sunday in Nadia district, where the weekend festival drew large crowds for the immersion of more than 200 idols. Adhikari posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, blasting the inspector‑in‑charge, Amalendu Biswas, for “unjust atrocities” against Hindus during the event. He claimed the police failed to keep law and order, calling the incident evidence of how the Mamata Banerjee administration views Hindus.
Police responded quickly. The Krishnanagar district police released a statement on X that clarified the events. They said the ceremony went smoothly and that the only trouble came at Kadamtala Ghat, where a group from the Chokerpara Club allegedly tried to harass and assault female officers. The police said they used a mild cane charge to restore order and that no major disturbances occurred.
The statement also noted that the police had already registered a case at the Kotwali station and that past incidents involving the Chokerpara Club included violence and property damage. Police dismissed the BJP leader’s accusations as “unwarranted communal framing.”
