Bengal school job case: Calcutta HC directs WBSSC to publish full list of ‘tainted’ non-teaching staff

Kolkata, Dec 1 (LatestNewsX) – The Calcutta High Court’s single‑judge bench, led by Justice Amrita Sinha, told the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) on Monday that it must reveal the entire roster of 7,293 non‑teaching employees in the state schools who have been flagged as “tainted.” This follows a Supreme Court order issued in April that canceled the 2016 panel of around 26,000 teaching and non‑teaching staff.

The court’s order came after it was learned that WBSSC had reported to the Supreme Court that 7,293 non‑teaching staff from Groups C and D on the 2016 panel were confirmed as “tainted”—that is, they had unequivocally secured positions through bribes. However, the commission’s published list at the time only showed 3,512 names.

Given this discrepancy, Justice Sinha has commanded the commission to publish the full set of 7,293 “tainted” names from Groups C and D.

She noted that releasing the complete list is crucial for determining the outcome of a fresh petition that challenges the new recruitment process set up under the Supreme Court’s mandate. This process opened up again after the commission’s 2016 panel was annulled earlier in the year.

The petition, which will be heard urgently on Tuesday, is the last moment for applicants to register for the new hiring drive, which closes on Wednesday for Groups C and D positions.

In its filing, the petitioners accuse the commission of major irregularities in sorting the 2016 panel into “untainted” and “tainted” categories. They argue that several definitively “tainted” staff members were mistakenly included in the “untainted” list, while some legitimate “untainted” candidates were omitted.

According to the Supreme Court’s ruling earlier this year, only those in the “untainted” category from the 2016 panel are eligible to take part in the new recruitment. The individuals identified as “tainted” will not be given this opportunity.
