A tragic car accident unfolded during Durga Puja celebrations in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district, claiming three lives and leaving seven others injured. The crash happened Thursday evening near bridge number two on Asian Highway 4, between Dhupguri and Mainaguri.
Crowds had gathered to visit puja mandaps and watch idol immersions when a speeding SUV suddenly veered off the road and slammed into a roadside shop. People standing in line nearby got caught in the chaos as the vehicle struck them, hurling several across the area.
Eyewitnesses say the driver lost control before fleeing the scene. Local residents jumped in to help, rushing the injured to nearby hospitals for urgent care.
Police arrived quickly and launched an investigation into the road accident. They suspect the high speed played a big role, and they’ve filed a case against the absconding driver. Teams are now searching for him to bring him in.
A senior Jalpaiguri police officer confirmed the details: “The speeding car rammed into the shop, hitting several people waiting there. Three died on the spot, and seven are receiving treatment. The panic in the area is real as families deal with this heartbreaking Durga Puja mishap.”
This incident has cast a shadow over the festive mood, highlighting road safety concerns during busy holiday periods.
