Kolkata – Police in West Bengal have arrested two men connected to the assault on BJP MP Khagen Murmu, about 51 hours after the incident. The arrest comes as part of an ongoing investigation that began after the attack on Monday.
The men were taken from Nagrakata in the Jalpaiguri district and are now being transported to the town of Jalpaiguri for questioning. Police said they are still searching for the other suspects who are believed to be involved. The names and political affiliations of the arrested men have not yet been released.
Khagen Murmu and fellow BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh were going to the flood‑affected area of Nagrakata to provide relief when they were attacked by a large crowd. Protesters hurled sticks, shoes, and stones at their car. Murmu suffered serious facial injuries and is in hospital awaiting surgery that may include a metal plate for his cheekbone. Ghosh was released on Wednesday after a brief treatment.
The BJP lodged a complaint with the Nagrakata Police Station and staged a protest outside the station demanding action against the attackers. Eight people were named in the complaint, but only two have been arrested so far. The GOP and opposition leaders, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Assembly Leader Suvendu Adhikari, visited Murmu at the hospital on Tuesday. India’s Union Minister Kiren Rijiju also visited the MP on Wednesday and criticized the state government for not acting fast enough. He reported that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has requested an urgent report from the West Bengal government on the attack.
The police continue to investigate the incident and will keep the public updated as more suspects are located.
