In Bengaluru, the RSS chief, Mohan Bhagwat, opened a lecture series celebrating the organisation’s 100th year. He called on India to rise as a nation grounded in “Dharma”—a term he explains as a guiding principle of duty and balance, not simply religion.
Driving Unity Across India
Bhagwat said India must spread awareness of its values “to every village and every section of society.” He highlighted the RSS’s goal to connect the 142‑crore people of India, many of whom come from diverse religious traditions. “Some call themselves Hindavi or Indic, but all are part of the same Hindu society,” he noted. The chief urged leaders to discuss the upliftment of weaker groups locally, so that no one can spark conflict.
Reflection on History
The RSS chief reflected on how colonial rule amplified divisions that had not existed before. He reminded listeners that Muslims who stayed in India were once part of the nation, and that efforts were made to weave a shared identity. He noted that the 1857 revolt and the Ayodhya dispute were moments when Hindus and Muslims stood together, but colonial powers tried to separate them for long‑term damage.
The Mission of a Hindu Nation
Bhagwat quoted Swami Vivekananda, saying every nation has a mission. “India’s mission is to give Dharma to the world,” he said. He stresses that true harmony means avoiding extremism, respecting others’ rights, and balancing progress with ancient wisdom. He added that civilization must move from “separateness” to a single, unified future.
Why “Dharma” Matters Today
In a world tangled in wars and conflicting ideologies, Bhagwat believes the concept of Dharma offers a practical pathway—an ethic of living without harming others while pursuing truth. He cites India’s geographic shelter, “the Himalayas,” as a symbol of resilience that kept the country free from foreign wars.
India’s Global Role
Bhagwat urged India to “educate humanity by practice, not preaching.” He said the nation’s ancestors shared knowledge without doing harm and that this spirit should guide India’s contributions on the world stage.
Call for New Direction
“Let us start afresh,” Bhagwat concluded, urging the public to embrace unity, practice Dharma, and move beyond colonial divisions to truly serve the nation’s future.
