In Guwahati, Assam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored the legendary singer Bhupen Hazarika during his birth centenary celebrations on Saturday. Modi called Bhupen Da, as fans lovingly knew him, a true champion of India’s unity and integrity. He shared how Hazarika kept singing songs that promoted national togetherness, even when the North East region faced tough times with violence and separatism decades ago.
“Bhupen Da dreamed of a prosperous North East and composed beautiful songs for Assam and the entire region,” Modi said. He added that his government is working hard every day to turn those dreams into reality. The Prime Minister felt lucky to join these special Bhupen Hazarika birth centenary events, noting that he had even written an article about the icon on his birthday, September 8.
Modi fondly recalled how people nicknamed Hazarika “Sudha Kontho” for his melodious voice. “Though Bhupen Da is no longer with us, his songs and voice continue to inspire India’s development journey and give it fresh energy,” he said. The government is proudly marking this birth centenary year to celebrate his legacy.
During the event, PM Modi also touched on India’s strong stance against terrorism. He highlighted Operation Sindoor and said the new India won’t back down on security or self-respect. “We gave Pakistan’s terror plans such a firm reply that the world heard the echo of India’s strength. No enemy of India will find a safe hideout anywhere,” Modi declared.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the Prime Minister warmly. “PM Modi has come to honor Bhupen Da today, and the people of Assam will never forget this gesture. We’ll always remember him for it,” Sarma said.
To mark the occasion, PM Modi released a special commemorative coin and stamp in tribute to Bharat Ratna awardee Bhupen Hazarika. The event brought together music lovers, locals, and leaders to celebrate the enduring spirit of this iconic figure from Assam.
