In the bustling streets of Howrah district, West Bengal, a shocking shooting disrupted the joyous Durga Puja celebrations on Tuesday night. During the vibrant Ashtami festivities, a group of bike-borne assailants gunned down a visiting businessman right on a public road, sparking widespread panic in the crowded area.
The attack happened around 9:30 p.m. at Banabihari Basu Lane in the Sandhya Bazar neighborhood. Eyewitnesses described how the attackers sped up on a motorcycle, fired multiple shots at 50-year-old Suresh Yadav, and quickly escaped into the night. Suresh, a resident of Gopalganj Gram Panchayat in Bihar, had traveled to West Bengal specifically to enjoy the Durga Puja festival. He collapsed on the spot from his injuries.
Local police rushed to the scene after getting reports of the gunfire. Officers quickly transported the critically injured Suresh to Howrah District Hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival. His body now awaits an autopsy to determine more details.
News of the Durga Puja shooting spread fast, heightening tensions in the festival-packed neighborhood. Senior Howrah City Police officials arrived soon after to oversee the response and calm the growing unrest.
Early clues from the investigation point to Suresh’s recent arrival in Howrah as a visitor. Detectives are probing possible links to Bihar for both the victim and the attackers. They’ve already seized CCTV footage from the area and started questioning nearby residents to piece together what led to this violent clash.
“We received reports of a man shot during Ashtami evening, right amid Durga Puja excitement,” a senior Howrah Police officer told reporters. “The bike-borne assailants targeted the businessman, firing several rounds before fleeing. He was rushed to the hospital but couldn’t be saved. Our teams are working hard to track down the suspects and understand the motive behind this Howrah shooting.”
As West Bengal’s Durga Puja events continue, authorities urge festival-goers to stay vigilant in busy spots like Howrah’s markets and lanes. The case remains under active investigation, with hopes for quick arrests to restore peace.
