Patna, Nov 14 – In the latest Bihar Assembly results, Anant Singh of the Janata Dal (United) won the Mokama seat with a decisive margin. The Election Commission said Singh beat Veena Devi of the Rashtriya Janata Dal by more than 28,000 votes.
Veena Devi, whose husband Surajbhan Singh is a powerful local rival, lost the close contest. The third main candidate, Priyadarshi Piyush of the Jan Suraaj Party, also ran but finished behind both Singh and Devi.
Despite being in jail over a murder case involving a JSP supporter, Singh remains a popular figure in Mokama. Local posters read, “Jail ka faatak tootega, hamara sher chootega” (“The prison gates will break, our lion will be released”), showing the excitement around his win.
Political observers note that Singh’s enduring support shows how caste ties and long‑standing influence still shape voting in the region.
Counting is still underway for the other 242 assembly seats. Early results show the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leading with about 202 seats, while the Mahagathbandhan holds only 34. The election was held in two phases on Nov 6 and Nov 11, with counting beginning at 8 a.m., first reviewing postal ballots, then EVM votes under tight security.
In the current assembly, the NDA holds 131 seats—80 for the BJP, 45 for JD(U), four for HAM(S) and two independents—while the opposition totals 111 seats, comprising 77 for RJD, 19 for Congress, 11 for CPI(ML), two for CPI(M) and two for CPI.
