In Chennai on Sunday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said the ruling BJP and the rival AIADMK are trying to use the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) to change the voter list and hurt working‑class voters, Scheduled Castes, minorities and women before the 2026 State Assembly elections.
Stalin claimed the BJP, working with the Election Commission (ECI), has already removed about 65 lakh names from the voter rolls in Bihar and now wants to repeat the move in Tamil Nadu. “They don’t have the people’s support,” he said. “Their plan will fail here.”
The DMK has already written to the ECI asking the commission to stop the SIR. Stalin warned that if the commission proceeds, the party will use all legal options and mobilise the public to fight the move. He urged party workers and voters to stay alert.
Stalin highlighted the DMK’s “Oraniyil Tamil Nadu” outreach campaign, which shows how government welfare schemes reach all sections of society. “Even though the BJP‑led central government has cut Tamil Nadu’s funds, our team has delivered on promises and has enrolled two crore voters,” he added.
He accused the AIADMK of aligning with the BJP and ignoring voters’ rights, while the DMK and the INDIA coalition shoulder the responsibility of protecting Tamil Nadu’s voting rights.
The controversy comes as Tamil Nadu prepares for the 2026 elections, where questions over voter list accuracy and possible disenfranchisement have emerged.
