In New Delhi, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Saurabh Bharadwaj fired sharp criticism at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday. He accused the BJP of betraying Delhi’s rural residents by slapping a Rs 235 toll on the newly opened Urban Extension Road (UER-2). This comes despite earlier promises that locals would get a free pass.
Bharadwaj labeled it the BJP’s classic trick of deception. He claimed the ruling party tricked villagers into showing up for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inauguration event. “They lied that no toll would hit local residents,” Bharadwaj said in a post on X. “Now, after the big event, they flip the switch and charge everyone.”
For centuries, thousands of people in Delhi’s rural villages have called the area home. Bharadwaj pointed out the harsh reality: these folks now face paying Rs 235 just to drive to a nearby village within their own city. “This betrayal was coming,” he added. “BJP leaders needed a crowd for the PM’s launch, so their MLAs promised no toll. Post-event? Boom—toll imposed.”
He didn’t stop there. Bharadwaj slammed BJP lawmakers for a habit of dodging blame on their own government’s decisions. “It’s their go-to move: MLAs and MPs act shocked, like the BJP-run government ignores them,” he said. “But it’s their party in charge!”
Bharadwaj also questioned what the BJP has truly done for Delhi’s rural areas. “Villagers are asking: What has the BJP given us?” he noted. He recalled how the BJP once struggled for votes in these villages, relying mainly on urban traders.
To drive his point home, Bharadwaj brought up a past controversy. Back in 2017, under BJP-led control of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the central government, a massive sealing drive shut down shops across the city. “Lakhs of shopkeepers and workers lost jobs,” he said. “Since then, BJP MPs have kept fooling people just like this.”
