New Delhi – The second day of the Parliament’s Winter Session kicked off amid a surge of protests, as opposition MPs pressed the ruling government to confront the controversy over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and ongoing electoral reforms.
Before the session began, several opposition legislators gathered in Parliament’s halls, brandishing placards and banners that demanded an immediate debate in the House on the Election Commission’s “biased and partisan” voter verification drive being carried out in 12 states and union territories.
Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition, along with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, spearheaded the rally, accusing the government of “voter fraud” and “electoral rolls manipulation” under the pretext of the SIR exercise; Sonia Gandhi also took part.
The slogans emblazoned on the banners read “End SIR, stop vote chori,” underscoring their unwavering call for a discussion on the revision process – an issue that had already derailed the proceedings on the first day.
Speaking to reporters, Kharge pledged that the opposition’s struggle against what they described as injustice and attempts to “silence the democracy” would persist.
The Election Commission has framed the SIR as a necessary “voter purge” ahead of the elections, but the exercise has deepened the divide between the government and opposition, a split that was starkly visible on day one.
Opposition leaders argue that the SIR is merely a backdoor strategy designed by the ruling BJP to facilitate vote fraud and theft, a claim the government rebuts as “a figment of imagination.”
With the opposition raising the stakes on the SIR issue while the government refuses to budge, the short winter session risks being marred by clashes and confrontations over parliamentary business.
This year’s winter session will run from December 1 to December 19, making it one of the shortest on record. The administration plans to introduce 13 legislative bills and a single financial bill during the 15 sittings scheduled over those 19 days.
While the opposition has brought up numerous concerns—including the Red Fort blast and Delhi‑NCR’s air pollution—the SIR remains the most powerful topic they aim to use to pressure the government.
