South Korea’s defence chief holds talks with officials from NATO, Saudi Arabia
South Korean Defence Minister Ahn Gyu‑back had a busy Monday in Seoul, meeting with senior officials from NATO, Saudi Arabia and Romania to talk about boosting defence and arms‑industry ties.
First, Ahn met Radmila Shekerinska, NATO’s deputy secretary general. He highlighted how vital close cooperation is and urged NATO to back Seoul’s push for peace on the Korean Peninsula. Shekerinska promised her support.
Ahn then flew into talks with Saudi leaders. He spoke with Gen. Fayyadh bin Hamed Al Ruwaili, chief of the Saudi armed forces, about expanding joint work in construction, energy and the defence sector. Ahn warned that North Korea’s growing nuclear and missile programs threaten the world, and Al Ruwaili pledged backing for Seoul’s stance on Pyongyang.
The visit continued with Saleh bin Abdulrahman Al‑Harbi, chief of the Saudi National Guard. Ahn urged Saudi Arabia to see South Korea as a key partner for its Vision 2030 goals. He also chatted with Maj. Gen. Rashed Mohammed A. Al Shamsi, commander of the UAE Air Force, exploring cooperation in space and artificial intelligence.
In Bonn, Ahn met Radu‑Dinel Miruta, Romania’s minister of economy, entrepreneurship and tourism. He asked Romania to help South Korean defence firms enter the country’s military upgrade program.
All these meetings ran on the sidelines of the Seoul International Aerospace and Defence Exhibition—South Korea’s biggest aerospace and defence trade show—ending Friday. The defence minister’s itinerary shows a clear effort to deepen global ties and keep the Korean Peninsula on a path to peace.
