On Monday, as India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms took effect, BJP leader CR Kesavan praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for pushing self-reliance and slammed the opposition INDIA bloc for focusing on “Parivar Nirbhar Bharat” instead.
Kesavan called the GST changes a huge win for cooperative federalism and parliamentary democracy in India. He highlighted Modi’s vision for a Swadeshi revolution and Aatmanirbhar Bharat, urging everyone to embrace self-reliance today and always.
“Prime Minister Modi thinks at least 50 years ahead when it comes to India’s future and people’s welfare,” Kesavan told . “Unlike the Congress and INDIA bloc, whose only goal seems to be Parivar Nirbhar Bharat, Modi has given us a bold path to an Atmanirbhar Bharat.”
The reforms stem from the GST Council’s 56th meeting earlier this month. It simplifies the old four-rate system into a cleaner two-slab setup: 5% and 18%. Luxury and sin goods keep their 40% rate. This move cuts prices on essential goods, which Kesavan described as a “force multiplier” for lasting prosperity.
“These people-focused reforms guarantee prosperity now and for generations,” Kesavan said. Families across India woke up to joy and relief, he added, as the changes empower everyone from daily wage earners to business owners.
Everyday essentials, food items, and even health insurance for senior citizens now feel the positive impact. Small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) – the backbone of jobs for young people – benefit too, thanks to Modi’s strong leadership.
The rollout ties into the first day of Navratri on September 22. PM Modi announced the “next-generation GST reforms” on Sunday as a key step in the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, India’s self-reliance drive.
In a nationwide address, Modi kicked off what he called the GST Bachat Utsav – a savings festival. “From tomorrow, your pocket will feel lighter, and you’ll buy your favorite things more easily,” he said. Poor families, the middle class, farmers, traders, and entrepreneurs all stand to gain from lower costs and easier access to goods.
This GST overhaul aims to boost India’s economy while making life simpler for millions.
