In Panaji, Goa, Congress leader Girish Chodankar has slammed the BJP’s ministers in the state, saying they’re more focused on money-making portfolios than helping the public. Speaking on Tuesday, Chodankar, who handles Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for Congress, pointed fingers at the BJP’s internal drama over department assignments.
The controversy kicked off after reports surfaced about Goa Minister Ramesh Tawadkar’s frustration with his portfolios. Chodankar claimed Tawadkar complained in a party meeting that his departments lack “Dum” – but what he really meant was they don’t have “Dhan,” or funds. “Do ministers pick portfolios to serve people or to earn quick cash?” Chodankar asked. He suggested Tawadkar could make a real difference by boosting youth through the Sports Department, promoting art and culture, or supporting Scheduled Tribes via his tribal affairs role. Instead, it looks like he’s chasing only the high-revenue ones, leaving the “bankrupt” departments behind.
Chodankar even joked that Tawadkar should aim to make his departments “Revenue Swayampurna” – self-reliant on earnings – rather than “Commission Purna,” implying shady commissions. Things heated up further when Tawadkar reportedly threatened to quit if he doesn’t get stronger portfolios. He even took a dig at Chief Minister Pramod Sawant with a Konkani proverb: “The king has taken away even the beggar’s last morsel.”
Chodankar didn’t hold back on accusing the BJP government of mismanagement in Goa. “People know how the BJP looted funds while refurbishing the Kala Academy,” he said. “I agree with Tawadkar – these departments are broke, probably because the government drained them dry.” This BJP vs Congress clash highlights growing tensions over Goa’s political portfolios and public service priorities.
