In Guwahati, the Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF) took an early lead in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections on Friday. The party grabbed one seat and stayed ahead in 22 others as vote counting rolled on throughout the day, officials reported.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) kicked things off with one win and leads in nine constituencies. Meanwhile, the United Peoples’ Party Liberal (UPPL) held strong leads in seven seats.
BPF candidate Ganesh Kachari won the Suklai Serfang seat, and BJP’s Lakh Dias claimed Nagrijuli—both in Tamulpur district.
Counting started at 8 a.m. across all 40 BTC constituencies, which span Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Udalguri, and Tamulpur districts in Assam. Of those, 30 seats reserve spots for Scheduled Tribes (STs), five go to non-ST candidates, and five stay open to everyone.
Former BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary from BPF led in the Debargan area of Chirang district. Current chief Pramod Boro of UPPL, running in Dotma and Goibari, pulled ahead in both spots.
These BTC elections draw big attention as the second ones since the 2020 Bodo Accord ended years of conflict and reshaped politics in the region. That deal brought peace and new opportunities for Bodoland’s people.
Back in 2020, a BJP-UPPL-Gana Suraksha Party (GSP) team dominated with 17, 12, and one seats. The BPF, once the top player, eventually teamed up with them.
Even with BPF’s solid start this time, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stayed upbeat about his party’s chances. “The final three days of campaigning were tough and might have hurt us a bit,” he told reporters. “But I’m sure the BJP will come out strong once all votes are in.”
Counting stretched into the evening, with results still trickling in from several areas.
