BSF Trooper Injured in Accidental Firing in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara District
A Border Security Force (BSF) trooper suffered an injury from accidental firing in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir. The incident took place on Thursday in the Nowgam area, where the force maintains an artillery battalion.
Officials confirmed that Sandeep Kumar, the injured BSF jawan, hurt his palm during the mishap. They quickly rushed him to a hospital in nearby Baramulla. Good news is, his condition remains stable, and he’s under medical care.
Kupwara sits close to the Line of Control (LoC), a tense 740-km border that separates Indian-administered Kashmir from Pakistan-occupied areas. The Indian Army handles security along the LoC, which runs through districts like Baramulla, Bandipora, Kupwara, Poonch, Rajouri, and parts of Jammu. Meanwhile, the BSF takes charge of the 240-km International Border (IB) in Jammu, Samba, and Kathua districts.
The BSF plays a vital role in tackling threats along the IB. They use special anti-drone equipment to stop smuggling of arms, ammunition, cash, and drugs dropped by drones from across the border. Pakistan often supports such activities to fuel terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, but the BSF has stepped up effectively to counter these drone incursions.
Beyond border guarding, the BSF acts as a second line of defense in hilly LoC regions. The force also helps local authorities fight drug smuggling, keep law and order, and provide relief during natural disasters. Back in the 1990s, BSF troops led key anti-militancy operations in Jammu and Kashmir before the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) took over as the primary support for local police.
As the world’s largest paramilitary force, the BSF has won top gallantry awards for its bravery in counter-terrorism efforts. Even in peacetime, they stand tall in serving the nation. Incidents like this accidental firing remind us of the risks our jawans face daily on the frontlines.
