Businessman Samir Modi Arrested at Delhi Airport Over Extortion Allegations
In a dramatic turn of events, prominent businessman Samir Modi landed in hot water right at the Delhi airport on Thursday. Delhi Police arrested him based on a Look-Out Circular (LOC) they had issued earlier. Modi, who is the brother of former IPL chief Lalit Modi, had just returned from a business trip to Europe when officers took him into custody.
The arrest stems from a complaint filed by a woman who claims she was in a long-term relationship with Samir Modi since 2019. Last week, police registered a First Information Report (FIR) at the New Friends Colony Police Station in south Delhi. The woman alleged serious issues in their relationship, but details remain under wraps as the investigation unfolds.
Samir Modi’s lawyer quickly hit back, calling the entire story "false and concocted." In a strong press statement, the lawyer accused the woman of trying to extort a whopping Rs 50 crore from Modi. They pointed to earlier complaints Modi himself filed on August 8 and August 13 this year with police officers, backed by WhatsApp chats where the woman allegedly demanded the money. "This looks like a clear case of blackmail and extortion," the statement emphasized.
The lawyer slammed the police action as rushed and unfair. Modi had even met the investigating officer before heading abroad, yet they arrested him the moment he stepped back into India without double-checking the facts. "It’s an abuse of the law and hasty police work," the statement added. They argued that the woman’s complaint is full of "wild and scurrilous stories" about events from four years ago, all supposedly happening in public spots like restaurants, offices, and homes—hardly the setting for the serious claims she’s making.
Modi, no stranger to business litigations, comes across as a respected figure in the statement. His team expressed full confidence in India’s judiciary and police, saying they trust the agencies to investigate thoroughly and clear his name soon. As the case heats up, many are watching closely to see how this Delhi arrest and extortion drama plays out in court.
