Kolkata’s Calcutta High Court has stepped in to quiet down a heated public spat between Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh and Bollywood superstar Mithun Chakraborty, now a BJP politician. On Wednesday, a single judge, Justice Arindam Mukherjee, ordered Ghosh to avoid any public comments about Chakraborty for the next three months.
The ruling came during a hearing on Chakraborty’s Rs 100 crore libel suit against Ghosh. Chakraborty claims Ghosh’s recent statements defamed him, his wife, and his son, damaging his reputation as an actor and public figure. In court, Chakraborty’s lawyers argued that these remarks not only hurt his family’s image but also threatened his career opportunities.
Ghosh, West Bengal’s Trinamool Congress general secretary, had publicly accused Chakraborty of ties to chit fund scams. He also took jabs at Chakraborty’s switch from Trinamool Congress—where he once served as a Rajya Sabha member—to the BJP. Chakraborty fired back, calling the comments false and harmful.
Before filing the suit, Chakraborty sent a legal notice to Ghosh, but it didn’t lead to any resolution. The court has now issued a notice to Ghosh and set the next hearing for December.
This case highlights the ongoing political tensions in West Bengal, where personal attacks between leaders from rival parties like Trinamool Congress and BJP often spill into the public eye.
