Luigi Mangione’s bushy eyebrows ‘only thing’ eagle-eyed McDonald’s manager noticed before calling 911: ‘Looks like the CEO shooter from New York’
At the Altoona McDonald’s, patrons could only see Luigi Mangione’s pronounced eyebrows streaking through the mask he’d worn, the manager later confirmed, and those eyebrows proved enough for a police sweep that night, as the courtroom replay showed. Customers with quick eyes noticed the distinctive brows and realized they matched a suspect wanted in New York, and they begged the manager to contact the authorities. The manager, who called 911 at about 9:15 a.m. on Dec. 9, told the operator, “It’s not really an emergency, but I have a customer here that some other customers were suspicious of, that he looks like the ‘CEO shooter from New York.’” The operator was told the suspect wore a black sweater‑jacket, a medical mask, and a tan beanie pulled low to hide his face, leaving “the only thing” visible—his eyebrows. “He’s by the back of our lobby by the bathroom,” the worker said over the line, adding, “I don’t know what to do here, guys.” Officers arrived a few minutes later, spoke with Mangione and, after he took a few bites of his meal, moved in to arrest him. The hearing opened Monday morning will examine Mangione’s assertion that his rights were compromised when police searched his backpack and questioned him without a warrant, even as he faces potential life imprisonment on state charges for the alleged shooting of UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson outside the company’s annual investor conference.
