The police in Kozhikode opened a formal complaint after violent clashes erupted in the town of Perambra. The first case names 692 people, including several Congress leaders such as MP Shafi Parambil and party officer Shafi Parambil, saying they attacked officers during the incident. The second complaint lists 492 workers from the Left Democratic Front (LDF) for forming an unlawful assembly, blocking roads, and hindering traffic.
MP Shafi Parambil suffered a fractured nose when police opened fire. He was taken to a private hospital in Kozhikode for emergency surgery. Details of the FIR were released shortly after his treatment, sparking criticism from the Congress party.
Congress leaders announced a state‑wide march to protest what they call police brutality against a sitting member of Parliament. Kozhikode District Congress President Adv. K. Praveen Kumar said the United Democratic Front (UDF) will hold a mass meeting at 3 PM in Perambra. The meeting will be opened by AICC General Secretary and MP K.C. Venugopal.
Tense scenes unfolded outside the Kozhikode Police Commissioner’s office when UDF workers staged a protest against the police and the state government, following clashes with CPM members in Perambra. Protesters clashed with police overnight, forced to clear roads in several towns before dispersing. Congress activists blocked access to multiple locations before the situation was brought under control.
Earlier this week the Congress intensified its criticism over the alleged theft of gold from the Sabarimala temple. KC Venugopal, the party’s General Secretary (Organization), said the temple is sacred for all of India and argued that the theft indicates the Kerala government and the Devaswom Board are trying to suppress the truth. He called for a court‑monitored Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry to uncover the real culprits. Venugopal noted that the Kerala High Court’s intervention brought the issue to public attention and that only a CBI investigation under court supervision could reveal the real perpetrators.
