New Delhi, Nov 29 (LatestNewsX) — A special CBI court in Ahmedabad delivered a three‑year sentence of rigorous imprisonment to former Senior Divisional Manager Mahendra A. Loonker of Oriental Insurance Company Limited (OIL) in Rajkot for a bribery offence that first surfaced 13 years ago.
The judge also directed the former executive to pay a fine of ₹1 lakh.
The CBI’s release of the press note clarifies that the case was officially registered on July 11, 2012, after a partner from a private firm lodged a complaint. While heading the Rajkot branch of OIL, Loonker allegedly asked for a bribe of ₹15,000 in order to facilitate the approval of an accident insurance claim filed for an employee who had been injured.
According to the agency’s statement, the accusations were that “Mahendra A Loonker, the then Sr. DM of Oriental Insurance Co. Ltd., Rajkot had demanded and accepted an illegal gratification of ₹15,000 from the complainant, Partner of a private company, in order to pass the Accident Insurance Claim filed by him regarding the accident and injury of his employee.” The CBI says it arrested Loonker on the same day the FIR was lodged, after evidence of the bribery was uncovered. An exhaustive search of his home and office in Rajkot followed, and a chargesheet was filed on December 3, 2012, charging him with demanding and accepting an illegal gratification, as well as other acts of misconduct typical of a public servant.
After weighing the evidence and hearing both sides, the court found Loonker guilty and entered the conviction.
On Friday, the CBI Court in Vijayawada handed down a one‑year jail term to a former railway officer for a bribery case that dates back almost twenty years. The judge convicted Matta Dharma Rao, who had served as an Assistant Divisional Engineer with the South Central Railway in Bhimavaram, West Godavari district, after he was found to have demanded and received illicit benefits from a contractor.
