Kolkata, Dec 1 (LatestNewsX)—On Monday, the Central Bureau of Investigation filed an expanded chargesheet in the RG Kar financial corruption inquiry at its special court. The new document adds former Deputy Superintendent Akhtar Ali, who had earlier complained about alleged wrongdoing by the institute’s former principal, Sandip Ghosh. Another name mentioned is Shashikant Chandak.

The CBI had previously laid charges against Sandip Ghosh, Biplab Singh, Suman Hazra, Afsar Ali Khan and Ashish Pandey, all of whom were taken into custody during the probe. Although Akhtar’s name now appears on the sheet, he has not been detained.

Back in 2023, Akhtar filed a written complaint with the State Vigilance Commission, accusing Ghosh of financial irregularities. He was then moved from RG Kar to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, serving briefly as Deputy Superintendent (Non‑Medical). In April this year he was transferred again to North Dinajpur district, taking charge as Deputy Superintendent of Kaliaganj Hospital. Recently he submitted a resignation letter to the state Health Department, which was rejected; a few days later he was suspended.

The Health Department clarified that the suspension came after the CBI, following a Calcutta High Court order, started probing financial irregularities at RG Kar. It said Akhtar’s role surfaced during that investigation. As Assistant Superintendent, he oversaw the procurement of essential equipment, and later, as Deputy Superintendent, it was alleged that he exerted undue influence over these transactions. The department also claimed he demanded large sums—hundreds of thousands of rupees—in return for securing business opportunities for equipment suppliers.

Officials say that between 2020 and 2022, Rs 2,39,000 was deposited into Akhtar’s account and Rs 50,000 was credited to his wife’s account. The suspension followed investigations into these transactions. Today the CBI has incorporated Akhtar into the chargesheet in this financial corruption case.
