CBI’s First Arrest in Vimal Negi Death Case: ASI Pankaj Sharma Detained in Himachal Pradesh
In a big breakthrough, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Pankaj Sharma in the mysterious death case of Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) Chief Engineer Vimal Negi. This marks the first arrest in the probe that’s been grabbing headlines.
CBI officials say their team from Delhi arrived in Shimla on Saturday evening. They headed to Ghumarwin the next day around noon and picked up Sharma. Right now, they’re bringing him back to Shimla for intense questioning.
"We’ve nabbed ASI Pankaj Sharma based on solid evidence from our Delhi investigations and fieldwork in Himachal Pradesh. He’ll face further grilling," a CBI officer shared.
Vimal Negi had just joined HPPCL as a chief engineer on June 15, 2024. But things took a turn quickly—by July 1, he was dealing with stress and getting treatment for anxiety. Fast forward to March 10, 2025, when Negi went missing. His body turned up eight days later on March 18, in suspicious conditions. The post-mortem showed he likely died around March 13, leaving a puzzling gap in those missing days from March 10 to 14.
The Himachal Pradesh Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) couldn’t crack that timeline, leading to cries of foul play and delays. Public anger grew, and after the Himachal Pradesh High Court stepped in, the case switched to CBI on May 23, 2025.
Sharma is set to appear before the CBI court on Monday. As the investigation heats up, everyone in Himachal Pradesh is watching closely for more updates on this Vimal Negi death mystery.
