In Kanpur on Sunday, India’s Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar received the Distinguished Alumni Award from his alma mater, IIT Kanpur. The ceremony, held on the institute’s campus, marked the 66th Foundation Day of the university.

“I am proud to be honored for excellence, integrity and leadership in public service,” the CEC said in a post on X. The award, established in 1989, is IIT Kanpur’s highest honor for alumni who achieve outstanding success and serve society.

Gyanesh Kumar earned a B.Tech in Civil Engineering at IIT Kanpur in 1985 and has since led India’s Election Commission, overseeing elections nationwide. The award will be presented to him today, alongside recognition of past recipients who have excelled in academia, entrepreneurship, and public service.

Earlier that day, the CEC reaffirmed that the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections will be conducted safely, transparently and without violence. “The Election Commission has zero tolerance for violence,” he told reporters. “Bihar elections will be peaceful, lawful and fully transparent, giving every voter the chance to exercise their right.” He encouraged voters to participate in what he described as a “democratic festival.”

Bihar’s two‑phase elections begin on November 6 and November 11, with counting scheduled for November 14. The CEC also highlighted the special intensive revision of Bihar’s voter rolls, calling it the world’s largest exercise to clean the electorate. “When the rolls of 51 crore voters across 12 states are purified, it will be historic and unprecedented,” he remarked.

The award reflects IIT Kanpur’s tradition of celebrating alumni who contribute to nation‑building. Gyanesh Kumar’s career, marked by a commitment to fair elections and public service, exemplifies the values the institute seeks to honor.

As the election season ramps up, the CEC’s message of peace and transparency resonates across Bihar. Residents and political parties alike are urged to prepare for the upcoming ballots, ensuring a smooth and credible electoral process.
