NC invites allies to discuss strategy ahead of J&K Assembly session, RS election

In Srinagar, Congress is weighing its next move as the National Conference (NC) plans to gather its allies before the next assembly session and the looming Rajya Sabha elections.

On Wednesday, Congress legislature‑party leader G.A. Mir told reporters that the party had called a meeting of its MLAs at the Congress headquarters at 5 p.m. He added that the party will decide whether to join the NC’s strategy discussion later that day.
“I have called our legislature party meeting now. We will talk about the issues, and if we need to share that conversation with the NC, we will do so,” Mir said.

The NC has sent an invitation to Congress MLAs, even though the two parties have been at odds over how to split the four seats up for the Rajya Sabha polls. In 2023, the NC denied Congress a “safe” seat, a move that forced Congress to withdraw its candidates from all four constituencies scheduled for voting on Oct. 24.

While the NC has nominated Mohammad Ramzan Chowdhary, Sajad Kichloo and Shami Oberoi for the first three seats, it also put forward a candidate for the fourth seat. In that race, the BJP now holds a clear advantage, with 28 votes against the NC’s 24. BJP has entered its Jammu & Kashmir president, Sat Sharma, as its candidate for the fourth seat.

The NC’s meeting will also include CPI(M) MLA Muhammad Yusuf Tarigami and five independent MLAs who support the state government.

Looking back at the 2024 assembly elections, the NC emerged with 42 seats, the BJP secured 29, Congress won 6, the People’s Democratic Party got 3, CPI(M) 1, the Awami Ittehad Party 1, Peoples Conference 1, and the Aam Aadmi Party 1. Six independent MLAs also won seats. Following the election, Congress, CPI(M) and five independents chose to support the NC‑led government headed by Omar Abdullah.

With the assembly debates and Rajya Sabha polls on the horizon, Congress’s decision on whether to align with the NC or pursue its own path will be closely watched by voters and political analysts alike.
