Maniac who fatally beat beloved New Yorker in horrific random attack made chilling admission, DA says: ‘Took his spirit’

In Brooklyn’s criminal court a 25‑year‑old named David Mazariegos was arraigned on a first‑degree murder charge. Authorities say he beat and robbed Nicola Tanzi, a 64‑year‑old Italian man, to death outside Jay Street‑MetroTech station.

The prosecutor told the judge that Mazariegos admitted the killing. He claimed he “took the victim’s spirit” after punching Tanzi at a security gate. Mazariegos kept stomping on Tanzi’s body, even after the man was already unconscious, the court was told. The attack left Tanzi with a cracked skull and a smashed nasal bone, deadly injuries that caused his death a few hours later.

Police say Mazariegos also searched Tanzi’s pockets for money and credit cards. The cards and a samurai sword were found in Mazariegos’ possession when officers arrested him near Times Square. He was wearing a torn Tyvek suit during the hearing, and to a courtroom assistant he flashed a grin, spat and spoke with a maddening laugh.

Mazariegos comes from the Bronx and has a previous record of cases dismissed because of mental‑health issues, prosecutors said. Because of the brutal nature of the crime and his history, they asked the judge to order his detention without bail. The judge complied, remanding him into custody.

Mazariegos’ lawyer asked only that he receive medical treatment. No bail was granted. The case now moves forward in Brooklyn’s criminal docket.
