Chennai Corporation to build shelters for rabies-affected, aggressive dogs

Chennai’s Greater Chennai Corporation is taking a big step to tackle stray dog issues by launching a Rs 7.67 crore tender for two new shelters. These spots in Velachery and Madhavaram will focus on housing rabies-affected and aggressive stray dogs, boosting the city’s efforts in stray dog management and public safety.

Each shelter can hold up to 250 dogs, for a total of 500 across both sites. They’ll offer secure spots to isolate animals showing signs of rabies, canine distemper, or dangerous behavior that could harm people.

This idea comes after the Tamil Nadu Animal Welfare Board pushed for better places to keep risky dogs under watch. GCC picked locations in south Chennai’s Velachery and north Chennai’s Madhavaram so animal control teams can reach them quickly from anywhere in the city.

Inside, expect dedicated enclosures, quarantine areas, and basic medical setups. Teams will catch dogs displaying rabies symptoms—like fear of water, excessive drooling, random biting, or clear wounds—and monitor them closely. Since rabies usually proves fatal within days, these shelters will allow safe observation and proper handling of remains through burial or burning to avoid spreading germs in the environment.

The project strikes a balance between keeping residents safe and treating animals humanely. Instead of random killings or poor holding spots, it cuts down on rabies risks in crowded neighborhoods while caring for strays responsibly.

Once built, GCC will pass daily operations to an expert NGO in animal welfare. This team-up ensures the dogs get the right care and quick help when needed.

These shelters fit into Chennai’s wider plan to handle stray dogs, which includes spay and neuter programs, vaccinations, and campaigns to teach people about good pet ownership.

Overall, the new setup should speed up responses to reports of rabid or aggressive dogs, calm worries about attacks and diseases, and make Chennai safer for everyone—humans and animals alike. It’s a smart, long-term fix to control street dog numbers and promote kinder solutions.
