Chhattisgarh: Beneficiary of PM Surya Ghar Yojana shares relief from electricity bills in Gariyaband

A resident in Chhattisgarh is saving big on electricity thanks to the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, India’s push to bring rooftop solar power to millions of homes. This government scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 15, 2024, targets 1 crore households nationwide by 2026-27, helping families cut bills and the country move toward clean energy.
Take Ramakant Sinha from Panduka village in Gariyaband district. He used to shell out Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 every month on power. Now, after installing a 5 kW rooftop solar system under the scheme, his bills have dropped to almost nothing. “I’m thrilled and so grateful to PM Modi for this,” Sinha told . “No more worrying about those high costs.”
The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana makes going solar easy and affordable. Eligible homes get up to 300 units of free electricity each month, slashing their reliance on the grid and leading to real savings. Plus, subsidies cover up to 40% of installation costs—Rs 60,000 for systems up to 2 kW, Rs 30,000 for those over 3 kW, and as much as Rs 78,000 for setups starting at 1 kW. Overall, the program could save the government around Rs 75,000 crore a year in power expenses.
Progress is picking up fast across India. Chandigarh and Daman & Diu have hit 100% rooftop solar coverage on government buildings, showing how it’s done. States like Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu are also racing ahead, boosting the national drive for solar energy adoption. If you’re a homeowner eyeing lower bills and green power, this rooftop solar initiative might be worth checking out.
