Chaos continues at Chennai airport due to IndiGo disruptions

Chennai, December 11 (LatestNewsX) – The city’s airport kept experiencing heavy flight chaos for the tenth straight day after IndiGo cancelled 36 services on Thursday. Officials said the cancellations comprised 24 outgoing flights and 12 arrivals, adding to the growing frustration among travelers who have been grappling with delays and uncertainty since the month began.
Since December 1, IndiGo has been in a nationwide operational crisis, mainly because of severe staff shortages and an ever‑growing shortage of pilots. These difficulties have severely hampered the airline’s ability to keep its timetable on track, leading to widespread delays, sudden cancellations, and crowds at several of the country’s biggest airports.
Chennai, one of IndiGo’s busiest southeastern hubs, has been hit the hardest. Passengers who arrived at the airport over the last week spoke of bewildering scenes: long lines at ticket counters, cramped waiting areas, and a noticeable lack of clear updates from the carrier. Many commuters received cancellation notices only after reaching the terminal, forcing them to scramble for last‑minute rebooks or pay premium prices for alternate flights.
Airport staff struggled to manage the overflow, as the repeated cancellations caused congestion at security checkpoints and service desks. On Thursday, domestic flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad were cancelled, as were services to Patna, Bhubaneswar, Kochi, Kolkata, and Coimbatore. International routes from Chennai also suffered, with flights to Singapore and Penang grounded. Numerous arrivals from those cities, in addition to Jaipur, Bengaluru, Coimbatore, Delhi, and Mumbai, were withdrawn, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.
The disruptions followed a rough Wednesday when as many as 70 IndiGo flights were cancelled at Chennai airport alone—a shock that rattled the travel industry and left thousands without an alternative. Although Thursday’s cancellations were fewer, officials warned that the situation remains volatile, and more disruptions could happen until the airline sorts out its staffing woes. With travel demand climbing toward year‑end, the ongoing turbulence in IndiGo’s operations is raising serious worries among passengers and aviation regulators alike.
