New Delhi – Senior Congress leader Rashid Alvi said on Wednesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s latest critique of the party over its handling of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks was a political move aimed at the upcoming Bihar polls.
Alvi told that former Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram’s earlier comment had actually planted the seed for the BJP to attack the Congress lead‑up to the Bihar elections. “When Chidambaram said the government had a “modus operandi” after the attacks, he gave the BJP a real political weapon,” Alvi said. “Now he’s revisiting that comment with the elections in sight.”
He recalled that a few months ago, a TV channel had asked Chidambaram whether India’s lack of retaliation after 26/11 was forced by the US or other allies. Chidambaram replied that it was a collective decision, but the new statement had changed the tone. “Only Chidambaram can explain the shift,” Alvi added.
Alvi also pointed out that when the former Home Minister claims that foreign pressure kept India from retaliating after the attacks, it becomes a hot political topic. “The BJP and PM Modi always look for such ammunition,” he said. “The previous normalisation by Chidambaram, which was acceptable, now feels different as the election campaign heats up.”
Earlier that day, PM Modi was speaking after launching the first phase of the Navi‑Mumbai International Airport, the Aqua Line of the Mumbai Metro, and other projects. He slammed the Congress for allegedly weakening India’s fight against terrorism. “A Congress Home Minister said an external country stopped India’s military retaliation after 26/11. The Congress needs to explain who stopped the response,” Modi said. “The UPA years (2004‑2014) weakened the war on terror, and the nation paid a heavy price.”
Alvi’s remarks come as the political climate in India tightens, with the BJP seeking any angle to challenge the Congress ahead of the critical Bihar state elections.
