In Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, senior Congress leader Chitna Mohan condemned an assault on the Chief Justice of India, Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, on October 9. He called the attack “unprecedented and deeply distressing,” saying it reflects how vulnerable members of the Scheduled Castes still are in the country.
Mohan demanded swift action against the attacker and warned that the incident sets a bad example. “It isn’t just an isolated act,” he said. “It shows the conditions many Scheduled Castes face today.” He also linked the incident to recent attacks on public monuments, noting that a statue of Ambedkar had been burned and that symbolic attacks on judges and activists are on the rise.
At the same time, Mohan criticized the Telugu Desam Party‑led coalition government in Andhra Pradesh. He said its promises to help farmers were a façade and that the BJP and TDP states that “big financial loans… are given to the rich, not the poor.” He pointed out that the state government buys only about one percent of the crops farmers produce, leaving most farmers in debt. “The Modi government is waiving loans for the wealthy, not for farmers,” he said.
When a 71‑year‑old lawyer, Rakesh Kishore, tried to throw a shoe at Chief Justice Gavai on Monday, security officers stopped him before he could reach the bench. Kishore was taken out of the Supreme Court, and the Bar Council of India announced that he would be suspended from practice while an investigation is underway.
The incident drew condemnation from most political leaders and prompted a swift response from the judiciary, with the Supreme Court ordering Kishore’s suspension. The episode has highlighted the fragile safety of judges and the urgent need for stronger protection of the legal system in India.
