In Ranchi today, Jharkhand’s Chief Minister Hemant Soren met the families of two police officers who were killed in a Maoist attack in Palamu district.
He handed out two cheques worth a total of ₹1.10 crore—₹55 lakh each—to the widows of Sunil Kumar Ram and Santan Kumar Mehta. The money was paid under the State Bank of India Salary Package and was credited to the families’ accounts on the spot.
CM Soren spoke with deep condolences, saying the officers made a “supreme sacrifice” and that the state will always honour them. He added that the government understands the families’ pain and will stand with them.
Beyond the immediate cash, the Chief Minister unveiled new support plans for families of martyred police staff. Highlights include:
- Free residential school – The state will build a school on about four acres in Ranchi, modeled after leading private schools, to give children of fallen officers a quality education at no cost.
- Special hospital – The government is exploring a dedicated police hospital to improve health care for officers and their families.
- Immediate benefits – All pensions, post‑retirement benefits, and compensation will be disbursed without delay.
- Employment for spouses – Both widows, who hold university degrees, will be hired as clerks under police department rules.
In total, each family will receive roughly ₹2 crore, covering ex‑gratia, pensions and other welfare benefits.
The meeting, attended by Finance Minister Radha Krishna Kishore and other senior officials, underscored the government’s promise to support those who serve and sacrifice for the state.
