Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin rushed to Karur on late Saturday night after a tragic stampede at a political rally claimed 38 lives. The chaos erupted during an event addressed by Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) president and actor Vijay, drawing huge crowds to the southern Indian town.
Stalin visited the Government Medical College and Hospital in Karur, where he met families of the victims and those still recovering from injuries. He paid heartfelt tributes to the 38 people who died, including eight children and 16 women, calling the loss “irreparable” and vowing full government support.
The chief minister flew from Chennai to nearby Trichy before driving to Karur to assess the situation firsthand. In response to the Karur stampede disaster, Stalin announced immediate relief: Rs 10 lakh compensation for each family of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for those receiving hospital treatment.
To get to the bottom of the Tamil Nadu rally stampede, Stalin set up a one-member Commission of Inquiry. Retired High Court Judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan will lead the probe and deliver a detailed report to the state government soon.
In an emotional statement, Stalin shared his shock over the incident. “On hearing that 36 lives, including children and women, were lost in the crowd crush at the TVK meeting in Karur, I felt deeply pained,” he said. He extended condolences to the grieving families and ordered top-notch medical care for all hospitalized victims. “These priceless lives have shaken us all,” he added, stressing the government’s commitment to helping everyone affected.
On Sunday, Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin echoed the sorrow in a post on X. He mourned the lives lost in the Karur public rally stampede and offered condolences to the families. “Those who fainted or fell ill in the crowd are getting urgent treatment at Karur Government Hospital, as per the chief minister’s orders,” he wrote. Udhayanidhi urged the public to cooperate fully with relief efforts and the medical teams during this tough time.
