In Gorakhpur on November 18, Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath showed up at the Gorakhnath Temple to finish the state’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list. The SIR is a nationwide effort – carried out from October 28 to February 7, 2026 – that checks and updates electoral rolls in 12 states, including Uttar Pradesh.
At the temple, a Booth Level Officer helped the chief minister review the voter details. Yogi Adityanath, who himself is registered as a voter in Booth 223 of the Girls’ Primary School polling station near Jhulelal Temple, signed the SIR form to confirm the updates.
The Election Commission of India says the revision reinforces the integrity of elections. “Accurate rolls let every eligible voter vote without trouble,” said an ECI official. The effort reflects Article 326 of the Constitution, which guarantees free and fair elections for all adults.
By personally signing the form, the chief minister highlighted that keeping voter lists current isn’t just paperwork – it’s a civic duty that keeps democracy alive. His participation also aims to raise voter awareness and encourage people to get involved in the electoral process.
The SIR Phase II, running from November 4 to December 4, involves door‑to‑door checks by Booth Level Officers and agents from recognised political parties. Across 12 states, the commission has already distributed over 50.11 crore voter‑specific forms—about 98‑percent of the total—to help keep the rolls accurate.
The drive has drawn attention during recent elections. In Bihar’s assembly polls, the opposition questioned the government and the Election Commission over alleged irregularities in the SIR process, prompting a “Voter Adhikaar Yatra” by the Congress party. The current revision effort aims to address those concerns and strengthen public trust in elections.
