Cong observes ex-MP Assembly Speaker Srinivas Tiwari’s 100th birth anniversary in Rewa

Madhya Pradesh Congress Celebrates 100th Birth Anniversary of Former Speaker Srinivas Tiwari in Rewa

In Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, Congress leaders gathered on Wednesday to mark the 100th birth anniversary of late Srinivas Tiwari, the former Assembly Speaker. The heartfelt event in Rewa district brought together big names from the party, turning it into a memorable tribute to a key figure in Madhya Pradesh politics.

Senior leaders like former Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh, state Congress president Jitu Patwari, Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar, ex-LoP Ajay Singh, and several MLAs and former ministers showed up to honor Tiwari. They unveiled a life-size statue of him in the city, sharing stories about the man supporters fondly called ‘Dada’ or the ‘White Tiger of Rewa’ for his commanding presence.

The ceremony almost didn’t happen smoothly. For days, BJP and Congress clashed over installing the statue in Rewa. Tensions boiled over when police stopped workers from building the pedestal, claiming the land belonged to them. Armed personnel even guarded the site. But just a day before the event, the dispute resolved, allowing the unveiling to go ahead.

Adding a twist, Srinivas Tiwari’s grandson, Siddharth Tiwari, is now a BJP MLA from Rewa’s Teonthar seat. Siddharth, son of late ex-MP Sundarlal Tiwari, switched to BJP before the 2023 Assembly elections. Speaking to the crowd of Congress workers, Jitu Patwari praised the family legacy: "Srinivas Tiwari and his son Sundarlal were true Congress stalwarts. They never wavered from the party’s core values."

Born on September 17, 1926, in Rewa, Srinivas Tiwari served as Assembly Speaker during Digvijaya Singh’s Congress government from 1993 to 2003. He dominated politics in Rewa and the entire Vindhya region with his unique style. Tiwari’s life wasn’t without drama—controversies swirled around him, like the mysterious death of a tribal child and headlines over appointing 36 family members to government jobs.

His political run ended in 2003 when he lost the Mangawan seat to BJP’s Girish Gautam. Gautam, now the senior-most BJP MLA from Deotalab, later became Assembly Speaker under ex-CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Tiwari passed away at 91 in a New Delhi hospital in 2018.

Since then, Congress has struggled in Rewa, once a party stronghold. In the 2023 Assembly elections, they won just one of the district’s eight seats, which borders Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur, Varanasi, and Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad). This anniversary event highlights Tiwari’s enduring impact on Madhya Pradesh Congress politics and Rewa’s vibrant history.
