Congress appoints 9 new AICC secretaries, reallocates 5 in key reshuffle

Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress party’s national president, overhauled the All‑India Congress Committee (AICC) yesterday to boost the party’s state units before the 2026 elections.
Kharge appointed nine fresh AICC secretaries and shifted five existing ones, with all changes taking effect immediately.

The new secretaries will lead the Congress’s work in 13 states and union territories. The appointments are as follows:

  • Srinivas B.V. – Gujarat
  • T.N. Prathapan – Puducherry & Lakshadweep
  • Sanjana Jatav – Madhya Pradesh
  • Sachin Sawant – Telangana
  • Rehana Rayaz Chisti – Maharashtra
  • Hina Kaware & Suraj Thakur – Punjab (jointly)
  • Jetti Kusum Kumar – Odisha
  • Nivedith Alva – Tamil Nadu

In the re‑assignment round, the AICC moved experienced leaders to new posts:

  • Usha Naidu – Madhya Pradesh
  • Bhoopendra Marawi – Jharkhand
  • Devendra Yadav – Gujarat
  • Pargat Singh – Jammu and Kashmir
  • Manoj Yadav – Uttarakhand

The reshuffle is aimed at sharpening coordination across the party’s grassroots and state structures. The Congress has long struggled against the BJP’s dominance in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, making it a priority to place dedicated secretaries in those states. Punjab’s dual representation reflects the party’s need to manage internal factions ahead of possible early assembly polls.

AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal said the central leadership wants secretaries who can “hit the ground fast, review district‑level work, and bring clear action plans within two weeks.” The party will review performance regularly to keep the new team accountable.

The move follows an earlier Uttarakhand reshuffle, where 27 district presidents were appointed under the Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan. Together, these changes signal a broader plan to rebuild the Congress’s national machinery from the booth level up.

With the 2026 state elections in Tamil Nadu, Assam, and West Bengal on the horizon, the party’s leadership hopes that a stronger, more energetic AICC presence will translate into better electoral performance. The inclusion of young leaders and women such as Hina Kaware, Sanjana Jatav, and Nivedith Alva also shows Congress’s push for diversity and generational renewal.
