Congress came knocking at our doors for power: Kumaraswamy

In Bengaluru, a heated exchange erupted over accusations that the Janata Dal (Secular) party, or JD‑S, has “saffronised itself for the sake of power.”

Minister Priyank Kharge of the Congress party blasted JD‑S for allegedly aligning with the BJP. Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, H. D. Kumaraswamy, fired back with a sharp rebuttal that underlined Karnataka’s political history.

Kumaraswamy told reporters that the Congress isn’t the one chasing power; the party they accuse is. “They didn’t know that I led a coalition with the BJP,” he said. He pushed Kharge to keep political fights away from his home district of Kalaburagi, where floods loom and farmers need help. “Ask your father about what happened in 2018,” he added, reminding Kharge of the past power deals that hurt the people.

The minister criticised Congress for ignoring local problems even though it holds 136 parliamentary seats. “Karnataka farmers and activists suffer; nothing has improved,” he said. He claimed that JD‑S never begs for power, and blamed Congress for snatching seats and careers in past elections.

Addressing rumors about a change in JD‑S’s state leadership, Kumaraswamy said no internal discussion had taken place. He mentioned a recent meeting about reorganising the party’s core committee, a decision expected soon.

When Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the central government slashed grants, Kumaraswamy recalled the country’s first 50 years under Congress rule, when Karnataka saw central and state governments of the same party. He challenged the CM to discuss past funding and infrastructure successes rather than criticize the present.

This clash highlights the fiercely competitive politics of Karnataka, where alliances, land‑mass and leadership decisions shape the state’s future. The debate underscores how politicians of both parties look to history and current crises—like floods—to validate their claims about power and public service.
