Congress emerging as principal opposition in Odisha: KC Venugopal

In Bhubaneswar, AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal made a strong statement on Sunday, declaring that the Congress party is stepping up as the true opposition in Odisha. He emphasized that the party is actively challenging the BJP government both at the Centre and in the state.

Talking to reporters, Venugopal said, “We’re fully committed to fighting the BJP government. Our main job right now is to act as a real opposition party in Odisha.” He highlighted key issues the Congress plans to tackle, including the alleged ‘Vote Chori’ (vote theft) controversy, along with rising unemployment, women’s safety, and tribal rights in the state.

During his visit to Odisha, Venugopal held two key meetings at the Congress headquarters. He met with the Political Affairs Committee (PAC), Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) observers, senior leaders, MLAs, and party workers. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he shared, “Today, I attended the PAC meeting of Odisha PCC and the gathering of PCC observers under the Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan in Bhubaneswar. We discussed ways to strengthen our organization, the ongoing ‘Vote Chor, Gaddi Chhod’ signature campaign, and upcoming political programs across the state.”

The meetings also zeroed in on serious concerns like the sharp increase in crimes against women, missing women cases, and what Venugopal called the “total misgovernance” by the BJP-led Odisha government. He stressed the importance of building a stronger Congress presence at the district and grassroots levels, urging PCC observers to take a leading role. “The Congress stands solidly with the people of Odisha in their fight for justice, dignity, and democracy,” he added.

Party sources revealed that Venugopal praised OPCC president Bhakta Charan Das for guiding the party on the right path. He announced that the Congress will finalize presidents for all 35 organizational districts in Odisha under the Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan by September 30. Venugopal expressed optimism, saying people now see Congress as the main opposition in Odisha. With dedicated efforts from leaders and workers, he believes the party can defeat both the BJP and the ruling BJD. He also plans to review the performance of these new district presidents every three months to keep momentum going.
