In Bengaluru, Karnataka, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge slammed a recent incident at the Supreme Court where a lawyer tried to hurl a shoe at Chief Justice of India (CJI) Brijmohan Gavai. Kharge said it was “disrespect” and called for the lawyer to be removed from practice. He added that such actions show a still‑alive toxic mind in India, even 78 years after independence, and he thanked those in the legal community who condemned the attack.
Congress Member Pramod Tiwari also attacked the BJP government, saying the attempt to damage the CJI came from a “poisonous” mindset that targets weaker sections like SC and ST communities. He said the attack showed that the BJP and its allies are spreading hatred in the name of religion and caste.
The prosecution happened on Monday when 71‑year‑old lawyer Rakesh Kishore entered Supreme Court Chamber 1 and tried to throw an object at the CJI. Security officials stopped him immediately and he was taken away. While being removed, he allegedly shouted, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahega Hindustan” (India will not tolerate insult to Sanatan).
Soon after, the Bar Council of India (BCI) announced that Kishore would be suspended from practice. The decision comes after “prima facie” evidence that he had kicked off his sports shoes and was about to throw them at the Chief Justice.
The incident highlights growing tensions in Indian politics. Both Congress and opposition leaders are calling for strict action against the lawyer, while the BJP defends its people. The Supreme Court has not yet ruled on the case, but the bar council’s swift reaction shows that the legal profession is taking a stand.
